Just like that, we’re saying goodbye to August and welcoming September. The long summer days are slowly getting shorter, our calendars are beginning to fill up again, and there’s a feeling in the air that something new is about to begin. September has always felt a little like a fresh start, bringing a season of new beginnings.
Maybe it’s the back-to-school nostalgia that never completely leaves us, or maybe it’s knowing that a new season is right around the corner. Whatever it is, September arrives with an energy that makes us want to get organized, revisit our goals, refresh our routines, and start dreaming about everything we want the final months of the year to hold. However, before we rush into what’s next, we’re taking a moment to appreciate where we’ve been.
Read on to discover how we’re closing out August with gratitude and welcoming September with open arms and an open heart.
Primero, Gracias August
Before turning the page, take a moment to think about the month you’re leaving behind. Maybe August brought one last summer getaway, dinners alfresco with your favorite people, afternoons by the water, or sunsets that seemed to last forever.
Maybe it wasn’t particularly eventful at all. Maybe August was about working, resting, healing, figuring things out, or simply getting through each day.
Whatever this month looked like for you, there is something worth appreciating. You made memories, you learned something, you grew, and even if you can’t see it quite yet it, it’ll come to you. So, before we say goodbye, we want to take a moment to say: gracias por tanto, agosto.
Let Go of What You Don’t Want to Carry Forward
A new month gives us an opportunity to decide what deserves to come with us. Maybe you’ve been putting too much pressure on yourself, maybe you’ve been comparing your timeline to everyone else’s, or maybe there’s a habit, expectation, relationship, or mindset that simply isn’t serving you anymore. You don’t have to bring everything into September, and you’re definitely allowed to leave a little room in your life for something better to take its place, we encourage it!
Revisit the Goals You Set for Yourself
Remember those goals you were excited about at the beginning of the year? Now is a great time to check in. Go back to your vision board (if you made one) and maybe update it to better align with your current goals. Not to judge yourself for what hasn’t happened yet, but to ask yourself what still matters.
There are still four months left in the year. That’s plenty of time to start the project, apply for the opportunity, establish the habit, save toward the goal, take the class, or finally do the thing you’ve been talking yourself out of. You don’t need January 1 to begin again, you can do it now, September works just fine.
Refresh Your Routine
After the spontaneity of summer, September can feel like an invitation to return to a little structure and calm. Ease into the return to routine and try to: wake up 20 minutes earlier so you can calmly prepare for the day ahead; prep your breakfast the night before; take an evening walk; bring your water bottle everywhere to stay hydrated; create a Sunday reset routine that brings you peace of mind; put your phone away before bed or any other small habits that work for you.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight or make drastic changes that feel unattainable. Sometimes one small habit is enough to make everything else feel a little more manageable.
Make Your Space Feel Like a New Season
There’s something about September that makes us want to refresh everything. Open the windows, wash your bedding, declutter your closet, put away a few summer pieces, maybe even bring out a few lightweight sweaters, add fresh flowers to the kitchen table, light a candle while you clean, and so much more. Your home doesn’t need a complete seasonal makeover, just a few little changes that can make your everyday space feel new again.
Romanticize the Transition
Don’t rush past this in-between season. There are still warm afternoons to enjoy, summer dresses to wear, and sunsets to watch. Soon enough, we’ll be reaching for sweaters, ordering warm drinks, and watching the leaves change. Each season brings its own little joys, and September lets us have a little bit of both.
So, yes, take the evening walk, grab an iced cafecito while it’s still warm enough to want one, wear the sundress with a sweater thrown over your shoulders, and appreciate the cooler mornings. Let yourself enjoy the transition instead of constantly waiting for the next season to officially arrive, this applies to the seasons of our invididual lives too.
Make More Time for Your People
As schedules become busier, connection can easily become something we keep saying we’ll make time for later.
Don’t wait. Have dinner with your parents, call your abuelita, schedule the girls’ night, invite your cousins over, send the “thinking of you” text, or pay a visit to a family member or friend you haven’t seen in a while. Sometimes the most meaningful parts of a month aren’t the goals we accomplish but the moments we share with the people we love.
Choose an Intention for September
Instead of giving yourself a long list of resolutions for the month ahead, choose one word or an intention to guide your month.
Maybe September is about one of these themes: discipline, peace, confidence, consistency, joy, abundance, courage, gratitude, or another intention of your choice.
Whatever you choose, come back to it when the month starts feeling busy, and ask yourself: Does the way I’m spending my time align with how I want to feel?
Believe That Good Things Can Happen
Sometimes we become so focused on preparing for what could go wrong that we forget to leave room for what could go right. What if September surprises you? What if the opportunity comes through? What if you meet someone wonderful? What if the thing you’ve been working toward finally starts falling into place? What if you simply have a really beautiful month?
You don’t need to know exactly what’s coming to believe that something good could be on its way. Confía.
September Affirmations
Carry a few of these reminders with you into the new month: septiembre será bonito.
Hello, September
We don’t know exactly what this month will bring. There will probably be busy mornings, unexpected changes, difficult days, and moments when things don’t go according to plan. But, there will also be cafecitos and conversations. New opportunities and little victories. Family dinners and nights out with amigas. Cozy mornings and beautiful sunsets. Moments that seem ordinary now but might someday become memories we wish we could revisit.
At Next Gen Latina, we’re entering September without the pressure to have everything figured out. We’re simply choosing to move forward with intention. We’re appreciating where we’ve been, making space for where we’re going, and trusting ourselves through everything in between.
So, gracias August, for everything you gave us. And September? Estamos listas para todas las cositas bonitas que vienen.
Here’s to a new month, a new season, and another opportunity to create a life that feels beautiful to live.
