📋The Essentials Checklist
No matter if your little is 5 or 12 years old, these are basics that can help every student start the school year strong. Use this guide to make sure the essentials are covered and taken care of:
🎒Basics for Every Backpack:
- Sturdy bag or backpack – Bonus points if they get the chance to pick one that matches their personality!
- Reusable water bottle – Insulated options help keep water cool all day
- Lunchbox or bento box – Especially important if they prefer bringing homemade meals to school each day
- School supplies – Pencils, pens, markers, crayons, erasers, notebooks, and more–all age-appropriate materials for their specific grade level
- LABEL everything! – Things are bound to get lost or mixed up. Labeling helps keep it all organized
👟Clothing & Uniforms
- Comfortable sneakers – Closed-toe shoes are ideal for playground safety and P.E. on a daily basis
- Layering basics – Think sweaters, hoodies, and long sleeves. Even if it’s hot outside, classrooms are often chilly with AC
- Socks and undergarments – A fresh restock always comes in handy
- Uniform or dress-code friendly outfits – Make sure to include tops, bottoms, and any required accessories
💻Tech & tools
- Grade-appropriate tech – Tablets or laptops, depending on school needs
- Headphones – Useful for focus during tech-based lessons for homework
- Password manager – Helps encourage digital safety habits and teach good digital citizenship etiquette early on
📝Home Setup
- Homework station essentials – Stock up on pencils, paper, crayons, Post-its, etc.
- Calendar or visual schedule – Great for organizing tasks and helping visual learners stay on track
- Chore chart and/or reward system – Encourages responsibility and time management
🩷Emotional Prep
First day jitters are totally normal, for kids and parents alike. Talk openly about any feelings of nervousness or excitement, and create a supportive environment where your child feels seen and heard. Reading a book about the first day of school together or gifting them a small comfort item (like a keychain, bracelet, or special notebook) can help ease the transition.
The first day back to school can be an exciting and emotional time, but with a little preparation and a few of the essentials checked off the list, your family will be ready to step into the new school year with confidence.
Happy back-to-school season! 🎒✏️🍎
