There has been a lot of change in recent weeks–whether politically, socially, or environmentally. Life comes at you in waves, and the best way to navigate them is to ride them out together. As a community, our strength lies in unity and resilience. As social movements state, “El pueblo salva al pueblo,” meaning “the people save the people.” Now, more than ever, it is up to us to come together, share resources, and support one another in the face of any and all hardships facing the Latino community.
From economic disparities to healthcare challenges and social injustices, the Latino community continues to face unique challenges. We’ve highlighted a few ways you can help make a difference–no matter where you are–and be a valuable resource to those around you.
Know Your Rights and Share Resources

Educate yourself and your community on topics such as workers’ rights, healthcare access, housing assistance, and legal protections. Stay informed about policies affecting marginalized communities and familiarize yourself with resources such as ACLU’s “Know Your Rights” guides and share the information with others to help them stay informed and empowered to make decisions.
Volunteer with Local Organizations

Get involved with local organizations that provide essential resources and legal aid or other forms of assistance such as food banks, healthcare access, or educational programs. Volunteering your time or donating supplies can make a huge difference for families facing hardships while attempting to navigate systemic barriers.
Advocate for Policy Changes

Stay informed about legislation affecting Latino communities, and contact your city’s local representatives to voice concerns, sign petitions, and advocate for inclusive policies that protect and uplift our communities.
Create Safe Spaces for Dialogue

Building a sense of community starts with open and honest conversations. Whether this is casual amongst friends or family–create a safe space where people feel comfortable sharing their concerns, hardships, experiences, and/or resources without judgement or fear.
Offer Emotional Support and Allyship

Check in on friends, family, and coworkers who might be feeling vulnerable or overwhelmed by current events. Remind them that they are not alone by offering emotional support, encouragement, support through listening, and/or sharing access to resources.
Educate and Empower the Next Generation

The future of our community is in the hands of the next generation. Stay informed so that you can help to inform and teach younger generations about their heritage, rights, and the importance of civic engagement to inspire them to be future leaders and advocates.
Support Culturally Relevant Media

Representation matters! Support culturally relevant storytelling by amplifying Latino voices that tell authentic stories about immigrant experiences. Help these stories and truths be heard so that people can find a safe space to share shared experiences or even any hardships. Providing this safe space and representation helps to create a sense of belonging and validation.
Attend Community Events

Show your support for your community by attending and participating in events that advocate for basic rights and social justice. Something as simple as showing up can go a long way for someone who may be feeling vulnerable during this time, and it serves as a reminder that they are not enduring these challenges alone.
There are countless ways to show up for your community, whether it’s through advocacy, emotional support, or simply being present. In a world where change can feel overwhelming, having a strong support system and a community to lean on can make all the difference.
Remember–”El pueblo salva al pueblo.” Let’s continue to uplift, empower, and stand together.
